What is a Dermatome?

” Dermatomes” refers to the spinal cord “dermatome” refers to a tissue that covers the cord of the spinal. Dermatomes are important in allowing physicians to build diagrams of the spine, which are useful for diagnosis. Two major maps are recognized by medical specialists. There is the Keegan and Garret map and the Foerster map. These maps were developed in the 1930s and are still commonly employed. The trigeminal and maxillary nerve are the largest dermatomes.

Dermatomes are areas of skin which are connected to a specific nerve. When there is a spinal cord injury, the pain could be experienced in a dermatome that is surrounded by the nerve. In the same way, the pain triggered by shingles outbreaks is felt by specific spinal nerves. Dermatomes are segments of skin that is provided by the spinal nerve. These nerves relay motor, sensory and autonomic signals.
