What is a Dermatome?

” Dermatomes” refers to the spinal cord “dermatome” refers to a tissue that covers the cord of the spinal. Dermatomes are important in allowing physicians to build models of the cord, which help in diagnosing. Two major maps are regarded as valid by medical professionals. They are the Keegan and Garret map and the Foerster map. These maps were created in the 1930s and are commonly used. The trigeminal nerve , as well as the maxillary nerve are the largest dermatomes.

Dermatomes are areas of skin that connect to a specific nerve bundle. In cases of spinal cord injuries, pain may be experienced in a dermatome that is connected to that nerve. Similarly, the pain caused by an outbreak of shingles can be felt in particular spinal nerves. If you feel neurologic condition or pain that involves the dermatome, it is recommended that you see a doctor.

What are Some Examples of Dermatomes?

A dermatome is a segment of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve. These nerves carry sensory, motor, and autonomic messages. They form part of the peripheral nervous system, which connects the brain and all the body. Dermatomes can suffer from a spinal cord lesion. If one of these is injured, it can be easily treated using a local anesthetic.

Dermatomes in the thoracic region have been labeled by letter-number combinations, which show the connection between the area in question and the sensory nerve which supplies that region. For instance C1’s spinal nerve doesn’t have a dermatome, but those spinal nerves that are labeled as C1-C8 and T9 is a reference to belly button. Dermatomes are layered horizontally along the trunk, and dermatomes located in the extremities are usually in a longitudinal.

Dermatome maps are an integral part of textbooks that teach anatomy. However, the dermatome maps is inconsistency both within and inter-textbook. The names are inconsistent and certain textbooks have different maps on various pages. This is especially problematic when the authors of several chapters differ in their choice of dermatome maps. Many textbooks use the map of Foerster, Keegan, and Garrett but don’t include adequate references. Moreover, four textbooks use maps without citations, including one that cites only secondary sources.

Dermatomes are the areas of skin that receives sensory input from the dorsal branch of one spinal nerve. Dermatomes aren’t uniformly situated, but they tend to dip more inferiorly than horizontally. This is a natural variation and certain tissues are covered by more than one dermatome. Additionally dorsal spinal rootlets could have intrathecal intersegmental anastomoses to sensory neurons that originate from Dorsal limbs.
